FULTON LIONS SUPPORT ‘OPERATION KINDNESS’, KARASEK PRESENTS ON ARISE DIABETES PROGRAM

FULTON, NY – The Fulton Lions Club made a $250 donation to Operation Kindness, the brainchild of Autumn Barrick, a 5th grade student at Lanigan Elementary. In addition, James Karasek, advocacy manager, ARISE Oswego County office, made a presentation on diabetes at the club’s November meeting.

Operation Kindness, now in its second year, provides Christmas toys and gifts at no charge to those who need them. It runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 1, in the community room of the Fulton Municipal Building, 141 S. First St. Each shopper may take two new/gently used gifts for each child in their home. In addition to toys, there will be free drawings for popular toys, and there are also some winter coats available. Fulton Lions Induct Garber, DA Oakes Discusses Opioid Epidemic

FULTON – The Fulton Lions Club inducted David Garber as its newest member at its October meeting. And, Oswego County District Attorney Gregory Oakes made a presentation on the county’s heroin and opioid epidemic.

Garber is a retired teacher from the Fulton School District.

Oakes discussed the current heroin and opioid epidemic in Oswego County and how his office is addressing it.

The county’s Drug Treatment Court Program, Oakes said, is trying to give addicts charged with non-violent offenses the opportunity to be diverted into a substance abuse treatment program.

This gives the defendant the opportunity to address their drug and alcohol issues, stay out of prison, and have their felony charges reduced to misdemeanors.

The completion rate for this program is approximately fifty percent.

By offering treatment and rehabilitation, defendants receive the opportunity to become law-abiding, tax paying citizens, instead of taking up jail or prison space.

Oakes also said that Oswego County is one of only three jurisdictions in the state selected to participant in a four-year federal grant through the Bureau of Justice Assistance to start an Opiate Court.

The Opiate Court will allow immediate screening of jail prisoners to determine if they have an opiate/heroin issue.

They will be offered the option of immediate treatment, which includes Mediation Addiction Treatment.

This, as with the Drug Treatment Court Program, frees up space in the Oswego County Jail.

The Opiate Court, Oakes explained, is designed as a safety and stabilization court, with a focus on treatment and other services.

FULTON LIONS INSTALLS NEW PRESIDENT, PRESENTS ANNUAL AWARDS

FULTON, NY – The Fulton Lions Club installed its new slate of officers for 2017-18 and presented club awards for the 2016-17-club year at their June 15 meeting.

Michelle Stanard succeeds David Guyer as president. Other officers installed included: Zachary Merry, vice president; Linda Hughes, secretary; and Michael Reardon, treasurer. Lion Douglas G. Russell of Liverpool, past district governor, zone 20-Y1, presided over the installation.

Other positions installed at that meeting include:  David Guyer, immediate past president; Fred Aldrich, membership chair, Gail Holmes, tail twister, Geoff Sawyer, lion tamer, Deana Michaels, assistant secretary; Ron Browning, assistant treasurer, Brett Tallents, assistant tail twister; and Steve Chirello, David Dingman, Len Kellogg and Dennis Rupert were elected to the board of directors.

David Guyer, who completed his second term as president of the Fulton Lions Club, hands the club gavel to Michelle Stanard, president for the 2017-18 year.    

“Three outstanding Lions received one of Lions Clubs International’s most prestigious awards,” Guyer said. “Ron Browning, Gail Holmes, and Steve Chirello each received the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award.”

All have volunteered for multiple projects and committees, and have been steadfast in sharing their time and talents.

“Chartered in 1953, our club continues to be one of the most active in our district. FULTON LIONS’ CLUB AWARDS 2017 DOWD, SCARINGI SCHOLARSHIPS

Aryelle Barbagallo and Emily Gerth, both 2017 graduates of G. Ray Bodley High School, were awarded the Fulton Lions Club’s 2017 H. and Mary Dowd Memorial and John Scaringi scholarships respectively.

Each scholarship provides the winner with $750 per year for four years toward their college costs. Barbagallo, (second from left), will be attending Nazareth College where she will major in Physical Therapy. Gerth will be attending Elmira College where she will study nursing.

Fulton Lions Members In Syracuse Honor Flight Mission 009

Fulton Lions Robert Reynolds, left, and Leo Chirello were recent participants in Honor Flight Syracuse Mission 009 to Washington, D.C.

Reynolds, a Navy veteran, and Chirello, an Army veteran, both served during the Korean War.  On April 29, Honor Flight flew 80 Central NY veterans to our nation’s capital.  Their mission: “We fly our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect together at their memorials.”  

Honor Flight paid all expenses for the trip which included visits to the WWII, Korean, Vietnam, and Air Force memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and a rousing heroes welcome at Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport on their return.

FULTON LIONS CLUB DONATES $1,000 TO UNITED WAY’S STONE SOUP

FULTON, NY – The Fulton Lions Club recently donated $1,000 to the Stone Soup fundraiser for local food pantries, sponsored by the United Way of Greater Oswego County,  (UWGOC), it was announced by President David Guyer. “The Fulton Lions Club has contributed to this project for a number of years,” Guyer said. “It is of vital importance that we all pull together to support our local food pantries and the clients they serve.”

This year’s event, held April 11, at Holy Trinity Parish in Fulton, had soup donated from Blue Moon Grill, Tavern on the Lock, Mimi’s Drive-In, and the Foursome Diner, said Ali McGrath, UWGOC resource development director. Other supporters were Davis Brothers, C’s Market, Red Baron, Springside at Seneca Hill, Kathy’s Cakes, Sweet Cindy’s Gluten Free Bakery, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Kinney Drugs.

All proceeds benefit food pantries at the Hannibal Resource Center, Catholic Charities of Oswego County, and the Salvation Army.

Fiumara elaborated on waterfront development plans for Lake Neatahwanta, improvements to Recreation Park, and progress made by the Fulton Footpaths organization.

The Heart of Fulton’ Visits Fulton Lions Club

FULTON, NY – Author Jim Farfaglia and Mary Kimball made a presentation to the Fulton Lions Club on their book, “The Heart of Fulton at Home and Abroad: World War II and the Korean War,” at the club’s February meeting.

Kimball and Farfaglia read excerpts from the book, which recounts personal stories of Fulton veterans and their families during the two wars.
